Brighton after dark – 12 November 2013

Bmusic

Music videos required for new show to air on TV

Back in 1981 a television channel kicked off with footage of the moon landing, and an iconic opening line: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The music video played after this was Buggles’ ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’. It was, of course, the day that MTV was born.

Since then, music videos have go on to become a part of our cultural fabric, as important as films or TV. Think of Michael Jackson and you’ll remember the creepy, goose-stepping zombies of ‘Thriller’. The same goes for Beyoncé and that dance in ‘Single Ladies’, or Britney and those pig-tails in ‘[Hit Me Baby] One More Time’. These are iconic moments that take a snapshot of a particular artist in a place or time and do more to cement them in the minds of millions than a TV performance ever could (with the possible exception of Ziggy Stardust).

Even in today’s world of instant uploads, Soundcloud links and bandcamp pages, the importance of music videos remains. Whether you like it or not, image counts, and a music videos is a window for fans, critics and industry folk to get a feel for you.

Obviously, Bmusic are championing local music for our new local channel and vow to bring this transcendent pool of talent to more eyes and ears. So when Latest TV goes live in April next year on digital and Freeview we will be making sure music videos featuring local artists – that’s Brighton and surrounding towns – get the airing they deserve on a dedicated show, airing locally on Freeview Channel 8 and nationally on Sky and Virgin Media.

We need to build up our library and develop a pilot so if you would like to feature please send your music video for consideration to thisisBmusic@gmail.com as an attached movie file or a link to a download site. Alternatively, e-mail us for more information, writing ‘Music Video Show’ as the subject heading.

Brighton Noise

Alastair Reid on this week’s gigs
Tuesday sees the Brighton leg of Future Of The Left’s tour promoting new album How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident but the real draw here is the return of The Wytches, sharpened to a crooked point by near-constant touring. If you haven’t heard them yet, the three-piece are the latest to use Brighton as a platform to throw themselves at the rest of the country with gusto. On record they can appear intimidating and disjointed, the curse of the young and the loud, but the live show is where their psychedelic surf grunge infects the masses. If Kurt Cobain had a penchant for reverb and whammy bars then he might have written the lead guitar for ‘Digsaw’, a grim, dark, swagger of a song that, despite its sombre subject material, is so unrepentantly fun that it curses the listener to dance for its entirety. At The Haunt, this band alone are worth the £10 entry fee.

Taking Wednesday to recover, next on the list should be P For Persia at The Hope on Thursday, supported by Headquarters and the abrasive – in name, noise and general demeanou – Fat Bicth. P for Persia take a novel approach to rock n roll. Drums, guitar and keys set up in a line to dance and convulse to their own wild excursions, they intricate converted telephones and a Commodore keyboard with banks of synths and drum machines and should be one to tick off the list while they’re still around.

In a previous life, Friday’s main attraction is one of the only local bands to bring me close to tears at a live show. I may have had a few ales but Soccer 96’s ‘Level 8 Clouds’ is a masterpiece in heightened suspense and resolution, a song previously penned by DA-10’s Dan Leavers. Still making live electronica with synths and loop pedals that lesser men struggle to create in a studio, he’s now accompanied by ‘10-David’ on drums, this time at The Globe, and supported by the fantastic Foreign Skin, among others.

If you’ve still got the energy get yourselves back to The Haunt for White Denim on Sunday, where the band’s ludicrous levels of musicianship join the dots between every genre under the sun, yet still maintain a distinctly individual voice. Sounds impressive?

You don’t know the half of it.
Monday offers the choice of 5ive or Gary Numan. Seriously.
