Stage: Encore, bravo, brava!

If you think Glyndebourne Opera House is an elitist haven for the very rich then think again. The entire Glyndebourne team invest a huge amount of time, effort and money into producing a wide range of accessible events for everyone, some free and many very affordable.

This November Glyndebourne Opera House presents a brand new week of events and free behind-the-scenes activities exclusively for families and young people.

Encore Week (24 – 30 November) presents child friendly performances of Hänsel und Gretel and L’elisir d’amore plus a performance of Glyndebourne’s new Tour production The Rape of Lucretia, directed by renowned actress and director Fiona Shaw, exclusively for under-30s.

Key to Encore Week is Glyndebourne’s new commission, Captain Blood’s Revenge, designed exclusively for children aged 7+. This exciting production combines adventure, mystery and spookiness in a buccaneering tale of high jinks. Created as an interactive opera experience for younger audiences, this production is a must for any young theatre goer; tickets cost just £9 per person.

For the first time in the tour’s 45-year history, Glyndebourne will host a dedicated performance for the under 30s. Join Glyndebourne’s free under 30’s scheme now to access tickets to see Fiona Shaw’s new production of The Rape Of Lucretia for just £20 on 28 November.

On 30 November Encore Week encourages audiences to go behind the scenes to learn more about Glyndebourne’s world renowned productions and how they are put together. Enjoy free backstage tours, make-up shows, costume displays, props and lighting demonstrations, a technical showcase and a special screening of Kenneth Branagh’s The Magic Flute.

Encore Week aims to bring family and friends together to experience world-class opera at highly subsidised ticket prices. Audiences can see the very best of UK and international operatic talent in a week of events and performances designed to encourage the next generation of opera lovers.

Since 1968 Glyndebourne Tour has bought opera to millions across the country and this year more than 62,000 tickets are available. The Tour was founded by Sir George Christie, whose father began Glyndebourne Festival in 1934, and continues today with the same two aims; to make opera more accessible to people across the UK and to develop emerging talent.

Autumn cinema screenings return for a second year to form a crucial part of the 2013 Tour Repertoire. Glyndebourne’s seminal production of Wagner’s Tristan Und Isolde, which due to the scale of the production is too large to be taken on the road, will be shown in cinemas across the country to mark Wagner’s bicentenary year. Young or old, Glyndebourne screenings are a great opportunity to trial opera and see a production you haven’t previously had the chance to see.
