It shouldn’t be surprising, since his most familiar hit is ‘Make Me Smile’, but the real revelation with Steve Harley is how funny he is. Indeed, he could have just been a sardonic raconteur for the evening, and his audience would not have felt short-changed. However, between swipes at idiot journalists and memories of Top Of The Pops (‘I never met the man,’ he remarks pointedly) Harley and his Cockney Rebels deliver an energetic and breezy two-act set that has all the warm intimacy of sinking a couple of bottles of wine with your mates when someone gets the guitars out.
