STAGE: Bully Off

The sell-out hit of Edinburgh Fringe ‘Sunny Side Up’ created by Brighton’s The Theatre Workshop is filmed for TV and tours Sussex schools

To mark National Anti Bullying Week The Theatre Workshop, an amazing group of young actors, spread an important message across our young community and raise awareness by touring schools in Sussex with Sunny Side Up, which was included as part of a sell out double bill at this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The piece has been filmed by ITV and will be touring schools to promote the anti bullying message.

Twenty-one of Sussex’s most talented young actors wowed audiences at The Edinburgh fringe with the five-star rated piece, mainly from the Brighton area, the students all aged between 14 and 19 have drawn upon their own life experiences and those of their peers to really illustrate and represent a generation, their issues and gripes and how the words and actions of another can affect an individual for life.

The week long run in Edinburgh’s prestigious Surgeons Hall attracted emotional standing ovations from its packed seats. It is hoped that the same response is stirred when performed at Hove Park Lower School and Brighton and Hove High School and that emotive reaction can raise awareness of the effect of bullying.

Written and directed by local drama teacher and director Rebekah Whiteley, and with guest input from Sussex Teen author Jill Hucklesby, Sunny Side Up is set to be a success beyond the fringe, having been filmed for ITV Meridian Anti Bullying awareness campaign and the upcoming schools tour starting in St Richard’s Catholic College on 19 November. With cast members including Brenock O’Connor (Chickens, Game of Thrones) and Theo Gregory (E4 I.T Crowd) and Alice Kerrigan (Casualty) the piece is set for further aclaim.
