Campaign for ‘Cuddly Toy’ to reach Christmas charts top spot

Brighton’s Juice FM has set in motion a campaign to make Roachford’s hit 1989 song ‘Cuddly Toy’ number 1 this Christmas.

Juice presenter Guy Lloyd is the driving force behind the campaign, aiming to take it all the way to the top, for Christmas 2013.

After hearing the song again in the opening sequence of Alan Partridge’s recent hit film,’Alpha Papa’, Guy Lloyd said his love for ‘Cuddly Toy’ was rekindled.

He said: “It’s an amazing song that needs to be heard by a new generation. I’d love to see the Brighton community come together and try and make the song number one.”

Roachford promoted the campaign while on stage at Komedia during his recent UK tour and visited the studios on North Street to show his support.

The song charted at number four in 1989 when it was re-released.

Andrew Roachford said: “It is such a popular song and it would be great to have a new generation enjoying it. I fully back their campaign and believe they can do it.”

The band Roachford formed in 1987 with Andrew Roachford on vocals, Chris Taylor on drums, Hawi Gondwe on guitars and Derrick Taylor on bass guitar.

Within a year the band was successfully touring and their breakthrough came in 1989 with the hits ‘Cuddly Toy’ and ‘Family Man’.

As well as Roachford’s support, Simon Kirby MP has acknowledged and backed the campaign, promising to inform the Prime Minister.

Guy Lloyd is also hoping that ‘Cuddly Toy’ will beat the X factor winner in the race for Christmas number 1.

He said: “I’d love to wipe the smug smile of Simon Cowell’s X Factor face.”

The last most vigorously fought campaign against an X factor number 1 was in 2009 where Rage Against the Machine took the top spot with their single ‘Killing in the name’, seventeen years after its original release.

‘Cuddly Toy’ will be available to download from Sunday December 8th.
