Russian National Ballet: Swan Lake
Apart from a few faltering moments and tiny clashes, the Russian National Ballet took to the small stage with gusto. Although the regal dancing of Acts 1 and 3 was entertaining, and the agile jester drew generous applause, Act 2 ‘At The Lakeside’ was the undoubted highlight. Gracefully choreographed and performed, and atmospherically lit in an emotive blue, the audience was swept away and enthralled. The mournful fluidity of the flutes in Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music also sounded more clear and starkly moving from the small orchestra than the bombastic pieces of the other Acts. An elegant, memorable night out and the perfect festive treat.
