Council team helping to keep people safe on the roads this Christmas

Brighton & Hove City Council’s road safety team is supporting the Sussex-wide Christmas Drink or Drive campaign.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, 18 December), they will be at the ASDA store in Hollingbury from 10am to 3pm inviting shoppers to sample Mocktails, a selection of alcohol free cocktail recipes created to promote the campaign, organised by the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership.

Stores at Brighton Marina last Friday & Hollingbury this week have been mobilising their product demonstration teams to give shoppers the chance to try the ‘Sweet Sunrise’, the ‘Pink Panther’ and others.

The drinks are to reward the ‘designated driver’ this Christmas with a more interesting alternative to plain orange juice or water.

The ‘Drink or Drive’ message supports a month of police enforcement action across Sussex.

Bottle hangers are also on display in the alcohol aisles reminding drivers there is no safe limit, and the dangers of driving the morning after a heavy session.

The campaign includes web chats and twitter conversations with roads policing officers and stories about the impact of Drink/ Drug Driving on families and communities.

During the Sussex wide campaign in June, 3,748 drivers were stopped and breathalysed across Sussex, with 128 positive tests and 141 drink/drug driving arrests, a total of 3.8% of those stopped.

The council’s Road Safety team have also been working with East Sussex Fire and Rescue at the Amex Stadium and Churchill Square this month handing out late night travel information for revellers in Brighton this Christmas.
