Kurt Vile And The Violators
Vile’s ‘Wakin On A Pretty Daze’ is one of the best albums of the year, with his hazy laid-back tunes sounding like The Byrds or Big Star. The sprawling, long songs are perhaps more suited to a sunny Sunday at home though, rather than a rainy Tuesday night in December. Although the musicianship was solid and the songwriting strong enough to retain this reviewer’s attention, the tempo barely ever changed and some minds did wander. The sold-out crowd was energised by a long wall-of-guitar-noise and saxophone jam near the end however, and Vile was charming throughout, politely asking Nick Cave to say hello if anyone knew him.
