Roedean residents make fresh plea over coach parking
Residents in the Roedean area of Brighton have made a fresh plea for the council to relieve the problem with coach and lorry parking in their area.
Roedean Residents Association committee member Victor Mower presented a petition signed by 159 people asking for lorries and coaches to be banned except for access.
It was handed in to the Brighton and Hove City Council Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee at Hove Town Hall this afternoon (Tuesday 14 January).
The petition said: “We the undersigned request the council take urgent action to protect the residential streets of Roedean to include The Cliff, Cliff Road, Cliff Approach, Roedean Crescent, Roedean Way, Roedean Vale and Roedean Heights by implementing a traffic regulation order (TRO) banning coaches and HGVs except for access.
“As local residents we are extremely concerned about the health and safety implications of coaches overspilling from their current unofficial parking in Roedean Road into our residential streets which are totally unsuitable for such traffic.
“We recognise there is a wider debate about coach parking for the city.
“However, we urge the council to act now with this specific TRO to protect our streets before it is too late and a major incident occurs.”
The issue was exacerbated by the lack of a coach and lorry park apart from spaces on the seafront along Madeira Drive, Brighton.
Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee chairman Pete West said: “Alternative sites have proved elusive.”
He was concerned about the possibility of displacing the problem although Councillor Graham Cox set out reasons why this was unlikely.
Councillor Cox called for a report to be brought back to a future meeting of the committee.
Councillor West agreed and the petition was noted.
