Soloists of the Royal College of Music with Ruisi Quartet
The stage was glorious for this Sunday afternoon concert with the blinds open and sunlight streaming into the large space of the Corn Exchange. Our experience was unfortunately a little hindered by our position in the audience. We were sat directly behind the horn player, which rendered the bassoon completely inaudible, and stifled the quartet’s beautifully intertwining violinists.
The playing coalesced more smoothly in the later movements of Schubert’s Octet in F (D.803 1824) however, and the recurring motif from the clarinet was delicately melodic and subtly played by Elaine Ruby. The performance didn’t quite lift off, but the soloists performed superbly and it’s always exciting to witness young talent in its developmental stages.
