Brighton Science Festival: The truth is out there

Brighton Science Festival returns for 2014, with events for all ages taking you into a world of the weird & wonderful

The 2014 Brighton Science Festival runs from Thursday 6th February–Sunday 2nd March, and promises to liven up a dreary February, whether you want to dip your toe or dive headfirst into the world of science.

Events kick off with Bright Sparks family fun – two days of exciting activities for curious minds. Packed half-term and evening programmes feature Raspberry Pi, Lego robots, Festival of the Spoken Nerd, and Wendy Hall on the dark side of the web, whilst B.Radical lets teens loose at the Brighton Youth Centre.

Bright Sparks family science takes place on Saturday 15th–Sunday 16th February. Two days of scientific discovery at Hove Park Upper School, with 60 sparkling shows and activities including the Stuff Is Made Of Stuff show, gene decoding, 3D-printing, and… sheep!

It’s full steam ahead into half-term with workshops around Brighton every day from Monday 17th–Friday 21st February.

On Saturday 22nd February B.Radical takes off at the Brighton Youth Centre. For teens and all those hungry for a bigger challenge, Hydrogen car racing, zombies, arduino guitars and Exploring Senses toy hacking battle for your attention. Plus, see if you can spot the physics buskers popping up at Churchill Square on Saturday!

For adults, the festival programme is similarly packed. Simon Watt takes you further Inside Nature’s Giants, Trevor Cox opens your ears to the sonic wonderland of acoustics with humming dunes and creaking glaciers, and a new show from The Festival of the Spoken Nerd exposes visitors to Full Frontal Nerdity.

Two weeks and 60 events later is the Big Science Weekend (Saturday1st–Sunday 2nd March). Big Science Saturday is for Big ideas, then Simon Singh enlightens us about the hidden maths on The Simpsons. Sunday rounds off with Jim Al-Khalili at The Sunday Assembly and All the Fun of the Unfair where Caroline Lucas, Richard Wilkinson and others explore fairness everywhere from bacteria to banking.
