Robert Powell in Just So, with Christine Croshaw(piano) & Clive Conway (flute)

As the military step back from Afghanistan and we are remembering 1914, the time is right to reassess Rudyard Kipling. Robert Powell, relaxed with a finely polished script, gently took us through his picaresque and fascinating life. I’d never appreciated the significance of Kipling’s distressing childhood or the extent of his American connections. The selection of wistful, poignant or humorous episodes were beautifully punctuated by short musical interludes, from Bach to Rachmaninov and favourite pieces of Elgar. They seemed to turn the unadorned stage into an Edwardian parlour. Affectionate and informative, it made a worthy tribute to a great writer.

We had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Robert Powell after a Charity Concert at the Cadogan Hall London in December 2011 where our nephew, singer James Loynes had shared the programme. It was a great experience for us to enjoy once again Robert’s sincerity and his obvious pleasure in sharing his gift, through the writings and life of Rudyard Kipling at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing on February 9th.
