Stage: English National Opera & Worthing WOW
English National Opera’s productions broadcast live into cinemas
Launching this February, ENO Screen will see English National Opera’s productions broadcast live into cinemas across the UK and Ireland and selected cinemas worldwide. Shot in stunning multi-camera HD, ENO Screen will be as distinctive as ENO’s live work in the theatre, creating a unique cinematic experience for audience members across the globe.
On 24 February you can experience the searing psychological drama, intrigue and suspense of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, screened live from the London Coliseum.
Hailed by The Observer as ‘An unmissable production that unleashes the opera’s thrilling power’ and the Sunday Express as a ‘A tidal wave of sound that is virtually overwhelming’ David Alden’s award-winning production paints a vivid picture of a small community’s descent into suspicion, gossip and mob mentality in the face of a tragedy.
In a small coastal fishing village in Suffolk, fisherman Peter Grimes’ apprentice disappears at sea.
What really happened to the boy? Was Peter Grimes involved? Despite the villagers’ suspicions, after questioning in court, Grimes is released without charge. Subjected to a hate campaign, Peter Grimes’s state of mind and behaviour becomes increasingly unstable. And then he takes on another apprentice with tragic consequences.
Peter Grimes contains some of the most evocative music ever written. The wildness of the sea and the instability of Grimes’s mind are superbly reflected in Britten’s music. Stuart Skelton in the title role has been described
as the ‘definitive’ Peter Grimes and has performed the role all over the world.
This is an ummissable opportunity to catch this world class production, screened live at Cineworld, Brighton Marina.

WOW – a new festival
This June sees the introduction of an exciting new festival for Worthing WOW – Worthing World of Words will be a festival created to celebrate books, films, theatre and the joy of words. Focusing on local Worthing and Sussex based writers, performers, playwrights and film-makers, Worthing WOW will present a diverse range of events at the Connaught Studio, Pavilion and various venues around the town for one whole week – 15th to 22nd June 2014.
The festival boasts three esteemed writers as patrons Maureen Duffy, Simon Brett and Judy Upton – all of whom are from Sussex and testimony to the skill and talent the county possesses. They will each host their own event during the week of the festival.
Melody Bridges, Artistic Director of the festival said: “At the core of Worthing WOW is a desire to celebrate the power of words in all their glory. Words can create. Worthing WOW was born from the need to discover in Sussex ‘new words’, new scripts, new films, new poems, and new talent, which has gradually escalated into a festival that will ignite the creative flame in Worthing. Worthing has a fantastic literary heritage: Shelley, Byron, Austen, Wilde, Priestley all came here and were inspired by our beautiful seaside town. We want to celebrate the past as well as invest in encouraging our writers’ of the future. Worthing WOW is a community partnership formed by like-minded individuals who share common goals to celebrate local talent, inspire young creative minds and encourage new talent across the arts.”
The definitive programme will be confirmed in March, but here’s a taster of Worthing’s WOW factor…. Simon Brett and Judy Upton host an evening highlighting their writing careers, with tasty morsels from their best plays. The legendary Maureen Duffy shares an evening of anecdotes and poetry with us alongside local poets; the imitable John Hegley takes to the stage alongside local storytellers and musicians. Mainstream cinema, theatre and education events sit alongside town-based debate events at Splash Point, competitions, storytelling, family picnic fun, literary cafes, Bible readings, WOW word of the week, WOW search for Sussex’s Mr Darcy (it could be you!) and if that wasn’t enough they’re looking for a Poet in Residence for the week… a real chance for the town to unite, participate and celebrate its’ creativity and the beauty of words!
