Basia Bulat

After previous Great Escape and support appearances this was the Canadian’s first headlining Brighton show. Accompanying herself on keyboards and loops, alongside her trademark autoharp, she delighted the weather-beaten crowd with a set comprised of earlier folk experiments and more rounded numbers from her latest album ”Tall Tall Shadow’. From the simplicity of the ukelele-like 10-string charango songs to effects-laden mini-epics like ‘Promise Not To Think About Love’, Basia proved herself to be a confident and enigmatic exponent of folksy pop. This was an enjoyable hour in the company of a performer who deserves to be more widely recognised.
