Hove MP celebrates 9 years of hunting ban in Parliament

Mike Weatherley, MP for Hove and Portslade, joined the RSPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Parliament to mark the 9th anniversary of the Hunting Act coming into force.

The Hunting Act prohibited the hunting of wild mammals, including foxes, deer, hares and mink with dogs, something which the vast majority of the British public opposed and continue to oppose.

Since the Act came into force, it is thought of as the most successful piece of wild animal legislation ever passed, given the number of prosecutions secured.

On average, one person every week is prosecuted under its provisions; of these, over two-thirds are found guilty, rendering arguments that the ban is not enforceable, redundant.

Mike said, “I am proud to support this legislation and have voiced my concerns over any hint of a repeal of the successful law.

“I want to pay tribute to the dedicated people at the RSPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports and IFAW for all their hard work in continuing to highlight the cruel nature of hunting with dogs.”
