Rambert performing Rooster at Theatre Royal Brighton

Rule the roost

The music of The Rolling Stones comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton in Rooster

Rambert brings rock ’n’ roll swagger to the Theatre Royal Brighton this month with a spectacular evening’s entertainment, featuring the music of The Rolling Stones in Rooster. This will be the first time in 13 years that the piece has been performed in the UK and its return is eagerly anticipated.

Rooster is Christopher Bruce’s electrifying celebration of the swinging Sixties set to music by the Rolling Stones. Sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stones’ most famous tunes, including ‘Not Fade Away’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘As Tears Go By’, ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’. Rooster was created by former Rambert artistic director Christopher Bruce in 1991.

The programme for the evening includes Barak Marshall’s The Castaways, a new dance work that is vivid and theatrical. Punctuated with humour and catchy tunes, it tells the story of the trials and triumphs of 12 lost souls thrown together. The set and costume design are by Jon Bausor, who designed the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony. Barak Marshall was recently named by the LA Times as a ‘Face to Watch’. He choreographs all over the world, and is particularly well known in Israel and the US, fusing traditional and contemporary styles in his work.

Also presented as part of the evening will be the short, sharp solo, Dutiful Ducks, choreographed by Richard Alston to the tongue-twisting word poem of the same name. It will be accompanied by a rare opportunity to see Merce Cunningham’s Sounddance, which features an improvised electronic score that is different each night.

Enjoy an evening’s entertainment that celebrates everything that Rambert does best: premiering exciting new dance alongside classic masterpieces and showcasing world class dancers, all accompanied by live music performed by the Rambert Orchestra.
