Boothby Graffoe
From the moment he ambles onto the stage there is a disarming charm about this very clever performer. The apparent lack of ego sets him apart from other strutting stand-ups and immediately wins the audience. His off-the-wall humour is finely matched by his musicianship, his songs have a quality that so many music-based humorists lack and this defining factor sets him leagues ahead of the pack. In the first half, yes he delivers a full evening of spontaneously observed comedy, he toys with the audience. In the second half, a new piece called Scratch, he delivers a witty but pointed attack on lotteries and greed, funny but also illuminating. The truth is, Graffoe is a talent that I would happily watch if he were merely peeling potatoes.
