Worthing Symphony Orchestra performs an afternoon of Baroque
Joyful music of the baroque period will be celebrated by Worthing Symphony Orchestra on March 9 when its members are joined by pianist Anthony Hewitt and flautist Monica McCarron as soloists.
The afternoon concert features seven works which characterise the period known for its ornamentation and innovative use of style: Bach’s Suite No.2 in B minor; Keyboard Concerto No.1 in D minor; Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major; Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits; Boyce’s Symphony No. 4 in F major; Handel’s Water Music Suite in G, and Williamson’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
The orchestra’s principal flautist Monica McCarron, who has performed worldwide and as part of many West End theatrical productions, will perform the famous flute solo, Badinerie, in Bach’s Suite No. 2 in B Minor.
Conductor, John Gibbons, said: “Live music is a unique experience that offers so much more than hearing music on a CD or mp3 player.
“Boyce’s symphonies can be considered extended overtures of great vitality while Williamson’s second concerto positively glistens with brilliant jazzy inflections.”
Pianist Anthony Hewitt will join the orchestra for Bach’s keyboard concerto. A popular soloist with the orchestra, Anthony is known for his communicative pianism which has received praise worldwide.
He performs as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician and is known to champion contemporary composers with frequent new commissions.
Anthony founded the Ulverston International Music Festival and other career highlights to-date have included orchestral engagements with the National Symphony and Princeton Symphony Orchestras in the USA, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia in the UK as well as recitals at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Weill Recital Hall.
While his discography includes the first coupling on CD of the Liszt and Reubke Sonatas.
It will be held at Assembly Hall, Stoke Abbott Road, Worthing on Sunday March 9 at 2.45pm.
