Comedy: Comic Boom

Offering a leg-up to fast-rising comedy talent, and showcasing top notch headliners – Comic Boom’s here

Along the breadth of the country, numerous comics have said that playing Komedia in Brighton is one of their favourite things. Add to that a club that has supported and nurtured them as they grew, first with five minute spots, then ten minutes and then finally headlining and you’ll understand why names off the telly like Nick Helm, Seann Walsh and Romesh Ranganathan come back time and time again to play Comic Boom. Other headliners over the years include Sarah Millican, Hal Cruttenden, Simon Evans, Roisin Conaty, Isy Suttie, Mike Wozniak and many more you’ll have seen picking up awards and on your telly rather regularly these days, testifying to the consistent high class of the booking and good eye to catching future stars of comedy. Which is how Comic Boom works.

This month’s headline act is the impressive Elis James, last seen in our town as one third of Committee Meeting, a surprise highlight of the Brighton Comedy Festival 2013. A regular on BBC Radio Wales, support act and friend of Rhod Gilbert (also leading to him being a regular on Gilbert’s radio show/podcast), this laid back Welshman has a fresh humour that’s highly enjoyable.

Add to that support from six incredible new acts, on the cusp of breaking through to the mainstream club circuit (including this one’s headline slot) and you have a keen eye for emerging comedy working for you and gathering future stars at all levels in their careers to one place; Comic Boom. It’s well worth reminding ourselves what a gem this is to have on our doorsteps every month.
