Stage: It’s dark outside

A dark, internationally acclaimed performance exploring dementia

The team behind multi award-winning The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer are back with another heartfelt and magical human adventure. Using puppetry, masks, animation and live performance, It’s Dark Outside is a beautiful and emotional piece about growing old, and one man’s journey through his life’s memories – a haunting, mesmerising and bittersweet experience.

Last year it was performed at Australia’s most prestigious international arts festival, the 2013 Sydney Festival, where it received impressive four-star reviews. Creators Arielle Gray, Chris Isaacs and Tim Watts had this to say: “We’re sorry to say it, but this show is sad. It’s a sad topic. Ultimately dementia is a slowly decaying disease, and like other diseases, can seem almost impossible to combat. With It’s Dark Outside we do not look to share insight into the mind of a dementia patient, nor do we pretend to understand the complexities of a disease which affects so many. What we present is a story; a tale of an old man who has gone wandering into a wilderness.

Whether that wilderness is the world outside, the old man’s own mind, or a haunting form of the disease – it’s up to you. What we can say for certain is the topic of discussion deserves respect, and although it lends itself to ultimately sad conclusions – perhaps we have found something beautiful, hopeful and comforting in the telling of this old man’s tale.

The performance features original music by award winning composer Rachael Dease, the creator of the highly acclaimed production City Of Shadows. It’s Dark Outside promises to be a moving, thought-provoking and innovative experience suitable for all ages.
