The Lady In The Van
Alan Bennett’s superb play is based on his real-life experiences with an eccentric lady living in his garden for 15 years. It works on many levels, as both an hilarious story and an insightful commentary on his inner conflict (two Alans star in the play) between the writer’s search for source material and the practical problems that occur when dealing with the selfish but harmless Miss Shepherd. The production is fantastic, with the main trio deftly capturing the humour and pathos in the parts, as well as creative staging and simple, effective lighting techniques. Funny, moving, eloquent and engrossing in a quintessentially English/Alan Bennett sort of way.
