Armed siege in Brighton brings Lewes Road to a standstill

An armed siege in Brighton has brought Lewes Road and the surrounding area to a standstill.

Sussex Police officers began searching for a gunman who was reported to have been seen in the area shortly after 2.15pm this afternoon (Monday 7 April).

He was believed to have holed himself up in a building next to the petrol station at the Vogue Gyratory.

A number of road blocks were set up and Lewes Road was still closed in both directions during the evening rush hour.

The force issued a statement which said: “Police are attending an incident close to the Sainsbury’s supermarket on the gyratory system in Brighton this afternoon.

“It has resulted in local road closures and there may be some disruption to traffic while the situation is resolved.”
