Seven Brides For Seven Brothers

Classic MGM gold, translated to the stage, this Western Musical gem is always a delight, but never more so than when the dance numbers are as good as they were last night. In fact it is the dance that holds this thin story together and captures the audience – the story is, to say the least, thin and in modern terms rather dodgy. Helena Blackman has a fine voice and plays Milly well, nailing the songs when needed but never losing the character. Sam Attwater has all the macho charm needed to play Adam but his voice seemed just a little underpowered to carry off the required string of big numbers and at moments the lack of power gave rise to a few tuning issues. Jack Greaves in the role of Gideon was in fine voice and every single dancer was on top form. Sadly the numbers added when the show was rewritten for the stage are not a patch on the originals but all in all this is a fun evening at the theatre.
