UPDATED: Police raid Brighton squat after injured man found in city centre

Police raided a central Brighton squat after an injured man was found walking through the city centre this morning (Wednesday April 23).

Emergency services were called at about 8.55am when a member of the public saw a man walking along Duke Street, Brighton, with an apparent head injury.

After he was located at the bottom of North Street, officers raided a squat in Duke Street about an hour later.

Some officers possessed riot shields but Sussex Police has since confirmed that none were deployed in the incident at the former Choccywoccydoodah shop.

Officers confirmed three men were arrested, one on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the raid.

Witnesses reported the area was cordoned off during the incident.

One member of the public, using the Twitter account @jordannstweet, posted the above picture on the social media website.

A police spokesman said: “The man [found in North Street] appears to have a cut to his ear and bruising.

“Squatters were leaving the premises as police arrived. There are no reports of other injuries.”

Police confirmed that the injured man has received treatment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Sergeant Dave Bennett, of the Regency Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We want to thank the local businesses and public for their assistance in the short time that we had to cordon of the immediate area for everyone’s safety.

“The incident was resolved quickly at the address and the property is now back in the hands of the owners”.
