Brighton welcomes Philosophy in Pubs
Around 100 amateur philosophers will arrive in Brighton next month to consider why it appears we cannot live without conflict in our lives.
Delegates to the Philosophy in Pubs National Conference from the 6th-8th June will spend the weekend listening and considering what makes us violent and if there are alternatives to war.
On Saturday 7th June, conference delegates will consider the conflict in our minds and Professor of Philosophy at Sussex University will address the subject of what happens when we have to overcome strong feelings in order to do something.
The conference, being held at the Imperial Hotel, First Avenue, Hove, begins with a talk and discussion by Dr Tarik Kochi from Sussex University, who will ask the question ‘Is war ever justified?’
Tarik will invite the audience to think about whether the West should intervene in Syria, do we live in the age of the ‘just war’ and is terrorism ever justified?
In the afternoon a soap-box session will take place on Brighton beach in association with the Speakers Corner Trust.
This event is free to anyone interested in either listening to debate or mounting the soap-box and having their say!
This is the first time the PIPs conference has been held outside its birthplace, Liverpool, reflecting the growing importance of Brighton PIPs around the country.
Brighton PIPs has been growing in popularity since it began nearly six years ago.
Organiser, Pam Lelliott says: “PIPs people enjoy discussing their ideas and thoughts and learning from each other. No academic or formal background.
Cost for non-residents including entry to all events, two lunches plus coffee/tea is £45.
