Baroque Inspiration – Louis Sclavis Trio & Ensemble Amarillis

Ensemble Amarillis aims to conceive and perform music as a universal language, in a new syntax working with the Louis Sclavis Trio. To some extent they achieved this, but the modern works needed more explanation. The programme notes gave only their titles and the instruments involved, which was just not enough. For example, ‘L’orvétan (The Quack)’ began charmingly but the initial joke was soon forgotten. Many minutes later, I was very glad when the air was cleared with a Prélude by Marin Marais. Some brief introductions, perhaps by a local announcer, would have facilitated appreciation of this very accomplished music.
