Herbie’s Jazz Breakfast
Despite his fame as the bassist with Lou Reed, David Bowie, Marc Bolan et al, Ditchling resident Herbie Flowers was never really a rocker; indeed, he professes a dislike of the snare drum. Jazz seems to be his true love, and with a crack team of friends he shows why, running through an inventive and varied set list of jazz standards such as A-Train, How High The Moon, My Funny Valentine, and My Favourite Things, plus some jazzed-up pop gems including Paint It Black. Never dull, nor ‘easy listening’, Flowers’ excellent sense of humour shows no sign of diminishing. It’s a bit of a shame there aren’t more kids running around (which is how it used to be) – the Spiegeltent is the perfect environment – but no matter, a fine way to start the day!
