Montfort’s March
Aided by a gloriously sunny day, enthusiastic audience and a talented group of engaging actors in the form of The Company, this commemorative walk marking the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes was a triumph. During the course of a four-mile walk over the South Downs, a fictionalised account was played out about the escort of a real life hostage, on his way to join the rebel Simon De Montfort, fighting the king. Martin Jenkins stood out as the sanctimonious Michael Tovey, ostensibly leading the charge, though all of these character actors proved convincing and thoroughly entertaining on the site of the actual battle.
