Under Review: Pinter-est

Staging the show downstairs in the bar area was a brilliant touch, complementing the intimacy and focus of Pinter’s taut, gripping play. Paul Morley’s was the most natural performance, reflecting Jerry’s sensitivity and openness, perfectly contrasted with the unpredictable Robert (Tobias Clay). Clay intelligently captured the sinister, potentially violent menace of the arrogant, smarmy husband and the tension when he was on stage was palpable. The second act felt a little rushed, but Pinter’s superbly constructed scenes were engrossing to the end, leaping around chronologically and deftly drawing a picture of the complexity of relationships, infidelity and friendship.
