Okuni: Kabuki Dancer
We were taken on a jaunt back to the birth of Kabuki dance language and performance, providing some context in which to read what was being offered to us; a small but attentive audience. The video vignette of the troupe putting traditional movement patterns to a throbbing music score was very affective and showed playful as well as earnest dancers. The costumes were very impromptu and thrown together, which suited the rag tag style of this piece. The street theatre feel of this piece required a shift in vantage point from me, which I gave willingly.
