Behind the scenes of Latest TV with Richard Shayler
Right fright
What’s that noise? Huh, who’s there? Argghhhhh! Oh, phew it was just the printer… But I’m the only one in the office!? GHHHHOOSSSSTTSSSS!! Oh hang on one ghastly minute, how to write a TV blog for an up and coming TV channel? Yeah, that’s my print out…
I’ve got every right to be jumpy though, readers, because one of the pieces we filmed this week was the fantastic Ghost Walks of The Lanes. Headed by the brilliant Silas (Rob Marks at the weekends) our newest presenter and Juice FM’s very own Guy Lloyd went down to learn all about the dark spirits who have been haunting city locations for years.
Guy started off very confidently but slowly got more and more scared. He kept it together right until the end and didn’t even need the spare pair of underwear he had brought. I wish the same could have been said about his cameraman. But I can’t, because I was that cameraman…
Moving swiftly on, we swapped pants for plants as we headed down to Architectural Plants in Horsham. What a stunning place! Essentially it is a garden centre, but it really is so much more than that. We were shown around by gardening guru Paul Donovan. As well as being a knowledgeable bunch about how to transform any dilapidated plot into a stunning garden, the staff there also have a considerable collection of exotic plants, trees and foliage. This includes an impressive plot of bamboo shrubs, one of which Paul believes to be the biggest in the country – a fact that quite simply bamboozled the whole team!
Box trees on stilts, Japanese acers, huge bonsai trees, shearing lessons, landscape gardening tips and an amazing coffee machine with biscuits were just some of the experiences the team took away from the day. When we got back to the office everyone said that they were green with envy, and that we should make like a tree and leaf before they got angry. Not sure if they were joking or not, but safe to say we ‘shooted’ out of there.
Elsewhere, we jumped right into the 21st century by capturing our very own Angi Mariani as her head turned into a piece of modern art. We went down to City College Brighton & Hove to witness our Ang join Rohan Lowe in having their heads examined for the state-of-the-art 3D scanning. Rohan wasn’t quite sure about the whole thing at first, but eventually put a brave face on and headed down there early. He wanted to stay ahead in the art game and was heard to describe his mood as apprehensive and heady. After the shoot however, he said he had never felt better. Stronger, even. One could describe his disposition as HEADstrong. You should definitely all HEAD down!
On a serious note, chancellor George Osborne came to town to announce the release of £420 million for the redevelopment of Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. Planning permission for the major scheme, which will see some of its 19th century buildings demolished, was granted more than two years ago. So we asked the chancellor why it took him so long to sign off the deal. To see our report, visit www.thelatest.tv.
And finally, as you’re all aware, it’s festival season in our amazing city. From international acts to emerging musical acts and enthusiastic school children, the next few weeks will see Brighton & Hove turned into a hub of fun, frenzy and fantastic entertainment. And we will be out and about filming the highlights. Make sure you stay tuned to www.thelatest.tv to see what we’ve been up to!
See you next week – that’s if I can brave the office after being spooked!
