Kemp Town carnival in Kickstarter appeal

Kemp Town carnival organisers have launched an online campaign to raise £3,000 to secure the event’s future.

The festival, which this year will take place on June 7, is one of Brighton’s largest free community street festivals.

But with funding never secure, those running it claim it is difficult to find the money to keep the event going.

To help cover the costs for 2014, organisers have launched a campaign on Kickstarter – with supporters being offered a whole host of goodies such as t-shirts and CDs, in return.

Just a few days, more than 25 people have pledged a total of about £1,000.

According to a message on the site: “This year’s Carnival will have something for the whole community with a brand new children’s parade, circus skills, street theatre, break dancing, the grand custard pie fight, belly dancers, choirs and much more.

“Funding is tighter than ever and we really want to make Kemp Town Carnival happen this year with all the glory and spectacle that the people of Brighton and visitors to the town have come to expect.”

This year’s event will feature five music stages, as well as the usual mix of magicians, children’s entertainment, live graffiti art, creative workshops and Morris Dancers.

That’s not forgetting the annual Parade of Flowers.
