Brighton Rock

Where the unsatisfying Pinkie-does-Quadrophenia remake added nothing to the legacy, the Boulting Brothers’ original celluloid take on Graeme Greene’s novel still stands proud almost 70 years since its release. Crime film expert Barry Forshaw prefaced the showing with an informed introduction that covered the role of Catholicism in both films and a guide through the best and worst British crime movies. The movie, gloomily lit in film noir shadows with the great young Attenborough as the twitchy teenage psychopath, makes Brighton itself the star, with the iconic chase from the station to the pier and the racecourse fight two highlights. A British classic.
