Edmund White: Inside A Pearl
We found ourselves seated onstage facing the auditorium, as Simon Fanshawe hosted a hugely entertaining evening in the company of gay literature polymath and bon vivant, Edmund White. Taking us on a trip through the underground scene of pre- and post-liberation New York, White spoke openly of his quests for love that only ever ended in sex, coming across as a blend of Tom of Finland and Gore Vidal on viagra. Diagnosed HIV positive in the 1980s, he relocated to Paris and befriended its eccentrics, from pimps to princes. Now back in the States and working on a new novel, long may he prosper.
