GoGo Penguin
Lunchtime concerts as part of the Brighton Festival are an excellent, if sometimes hidden gem; a chance to see some of the finest up and coming musicians encompassing mainly classical strands but sometimes of a jazzy flavour, such as this outstanding trio from Manchester, playing for the very first time in Brighton. Looking very causal, and somewhat surprised at achieving a full house, they went about their business with sublime skill, producing an infectiously melodic and groove jazz-based fusion, with Ninja Tune style trip hop very much in the mix, but also some more experimental modern styles. Double bassist Nick Blacka combines brilliantly with the tremendously inventive, yet always tasteful, drumming of Rob Turner, and the equally impresssive keyboards of Chris Illingworth, GoGo penguin’s 100% instrumental oeuvre always hits the spot; visually via their musical telepathy, which seems relaxed and unforced, and sonically via the richly melodic and beautifully textured rhythms that works just as well work in a late night club.
