Four Brighton and Hove drink drive arrests on first weekend of annual summer crackdown

Three people from Brighton and Hove have been arrested for drink driving in the first few days of the annual summer crackdown by Sussex Police.

A fourth person – a Londoner – was arrested in Brighton after his car mounted a kerb in the early hours of Sunday morning (1 June).

Those arrested were as follows.

• Steven Whylie, 28, was held after his car mounted the kerb in Old Steine, Brighton, at 4.20am on Sunday. Whylie, of Bayes Close, in Sydenham, London, will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 17 July charged with drink driving.
• Gavril Put, 29, was arrested at 9.50am on Sunday after his car was stopped on the A23 and he was breathalysed. Put, of Valley Road, Portslade, will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 17 July charged with drink driving.
• Brett Rhodes, 19, was arrested in King’s Road, Brighton, at 3am yesterday (Monday 2 June) after he was stopped while riding a motorbike on the A259 seafront road. Rhodes, of Westbourne Place, Hove, will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 17 July charged with drink driving.
• Charlene Palmer, 33, was arrested after she was stopped in Sutton Park Road, Seaford, at 11.55am yesterday. Palmer, of Saltdean Vale, Saltdean, will appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 17 July charged with drink driving and driving without insurance.

Superintendent Jane Derrick, the head of the Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “We warned everyone that we would not tolerate motorists driving after drinking or taking drugs but clearly some people do not listen to warnings.

“We will continue to catch and arrest drink and drug drivers throughout the month.

“If you are considering getting behind the wheel, you are making a choice of whether or not to put your life and the lives of other people in danger.

“The answer is simple – drink or drive.”
