Brighton Unveil New Boss Sami Hyypia
After weeks of speculation and the likes of Chris Hughton, Tim Sherwood and Malky Mackay being linked to Brighton and Hove Albion, the club unveiled former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia as their new manager.
Hyypia is best known in this country for his days at Liverpool, where he won numerous trophies including the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. He was a well-respected centre-half spending ten years at Anfield. The question is; can he take his experiences as a player into the world of management? From Brighton’s perspective, the answer is yes. Having given Hyypia a three-year deal and putting him top of their recruitment process, the Seagulls have placed their confidence in the Finn to be the man to finally guide them to the Premier League.
The 40 year old has only had one previous management role with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. After a decent start to his two-year stint in Germany, which included beating Bayern Munich away and progressing in the Champions League, Hyypia was sacked in April this year following a run of poor results.
Hyypia was quick to dismiss his sacking ‘What counts is what I do after this moment, and I’m willing to do everything I can to bring the club forward and to bring some success to the club.
The club has had a few good campaigns the last few years, and my job is to make it even better’.
The new boss shared his delight with the new facilities ‘I don’t think there’s many clubs in the Championship who have these kind of facilities, I like the fact that the academy is here as well because it’s very good for the young players to once in a while see the first team players coming and going’.
Time will tell if Hyypia is the right man to take Brighton forward and with a full summer to bring in new players and staff, it could be an interesting season for the Albion faithful starting on August 9th.
