Girl convicted of racist attack in Brighton street

A 17-year-old girl from Brighton has been convicted of carrying out a racist attack in the street.

The girl, who has not been named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to three offences when she appeared before Brighton magistrates last week.

She attacked two men and admitted charges of racially aggravated assault, common assault and assault by beating.

She was given a six-month referral order, ordered to pay £50 compensation to one of her victims, £25 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The attacks happened in Dyke Road, Brighton, on Tuesday 20 May and the girl was brought before the court on Tuesday 3 June.

Sergeant Peter Allan, Sussex Police hate crime sergeant, said that the sentence sent out “a clear signal that we will take a robust approach to those who target individuals based on their race, disability, gender identity, religion or sexual orientation”.
