Two cyclists injured during London to Brighton Bike Ride

Two cyclists were injured in separate accidents during the London to Brighton Bike Ride yesterday (Sunday 15 June).

One of them – a man in his thirties from London – suffered life-threatening injuries after riding into a telegraph pole in the Surrey village of Gatton shortly before 7.30am.

He was taken by ambulance to St George’s Hospital in Tooting where he remains in a critical condition, according to Surrey Police.

The force said that a woman in her thirties suffered head and eye injuries after crashing in another Surrey village, Outwood, near Gatwick Airport, at about 10am.

She was flown to St George’s Hospital where her condition was described as stable.

The accidents happened as about 28,000 cycled from Clapham Common in London to Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront in aid of charity.

The event – Britain’s biggest charity bike ride – was organised by the British Heart Foundation.

Surrey Police urged anyone who saw either accident or who has information that could help police to call the force’s Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
