The summer solstice ended perfectly in the company of one of the finest, yet relatively unknown, American soul singers. Accompanied by jazzy guitarist Dana Johnson, the gospel influence was strong throughout with her soft, funky electric piano arrangements recalling Donny Hathaway. Thoroughly engaging, she addressed us all as family and transformed the audience into a 3 part choir on a medley of Michael, Luther and Aretha favourites.
A tribute to the late Gerry Goffin saw her make ‘Natural Woman’ her own, and every original had the golden glow of a mid-’70s Stevie Wonder classic. A class act that deserves wider recognition.
