Celebcity: Brighton Pride, Elephant in the Room exhibition & Love Supreme Festival

Three weeks to Brighton Pride
Have you got your outfit sorted for Pride yet?! With less than three weeks to go, the excitement in the city is palpable as we build up towards the biggest day in the city’s calendar.

Over 150,000 people will throng the streets as the 2014 ‘The World’s a Disco’ Parade threads through the city to Preston Park, where we can reveal that Britain’s Got Talent winners, musical theatre boyband Collabro, will join the line-up on the main stage. The quintet, who will also be performing for HM The Queen at the Royal Variety Performance, includes Portslade resident Richard Hadfield who says it is a “dream come true” to perform at Pride. He joins Sam Bailey, Katy B, Blue, Kimberley Wyatt and Republica.

Elephant in the room
The great and good gathered last Friday for the private view of Elephant in the Room, a new exhibition by artist Louise Dear.

Louise has recently moved to the city, and wanted to showcase some of her stunning work in a month-long pop up event in The Lanes. Louise did not disappoint, as she even brought a life size model of a baby elephant to the show. Named Tinkle – the elephant is already owned by a collector in London and had been living in his garden – Louise thought it would be a good idea to give him a refresh, and painted Tinkle live in the gallery during the run of the show.

Guests at the party included our very own Olympian Robin Cousins, and local restaurateur Sue Addis, owner of Donatello. The show runs until 3 August. For more information, go to www.louisedear.com

Love Supreme

If you weren’t at Love Supreme at Glynde last weekend, you should really be kicking yourself right now. Because you missed three amazing days of jazz and soul in one of the most picturesque settings imaginable.

The sun beamed down on us as the legends that are Soul II Soul took to the Main Stage; taking us back to the heady days of 1989 when the seminal Club Classics, Volume One was released. In a set that ticked every one of the boxes for their assembled crowd of worshippers, Jazzy B, Caron Wheeler and the rest of the collective treated us to one of the most soulful and beautiful sets I’ve heard.

Meanwhile, US star Gregory Porter set the Ronnie Scott big top on fire with an unrelentingly beautiful set that showcased one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. His band were impeccable, with a saxophonist to die for. This charismatic and soulful man just didn’t want to leave the stage, playing an extra long set that hit all of the highlights of his Liquid Spirit album. So, so beautiful.

A kick-ass set by the original hip hop masters De La Soul made sure we went home buzzing. Google Love Supreme, and book your tickets as soon as you can. We will be there in 2015! We might even bring a yurt. As Caron Wheeler said, ‘Easy Glynde’.
