Open Market reopens in Brighton today
The Open Market was due to reopen in Brighton this afternoon (Saturday 19 July).
The official opening was scheduled to take place from 1pm to 5pm and will feature performances from the Brighton Lindy Hoppers, the Hullabaloo Community Quire and Her Father’s Daughter.
The reopening was part of a £20 million project, with the Hyde housing association built 87 homes in Francis Street at the same time as revamping the market.

Unit 2: Real Patisserie
Real Patisserie is about giving you something really delicious to eat. We make artisan breads, patisserie, savouries, sandwiches, and the greatest quiches! We make everything from scratch here in Brighton and serve it as fresh as possible.
Unit 3: Pets Pantry
Based in the market for over 25 years, Tonia at Pet’s Pantry provides a wide range of pet food and accessories and offers free local delivery.
Unit 4: Market Florist
An Open Market stalwart, Paul has been the market’s florist for over 30 years! He offers a beautiful range of flowers and plants as well as a great deal of floristry know-how.
Unit 5: The Flying Saucer
Cafe specialising in fine loose leaf teas and artisan coffee. A focus on local and organic produce including; juices, amazing cakes, gourmet sandwiches, pies, scotch eggs and freshly made ice cream. Look out for collaborations award winning street food vendors.

Unit 6: Brighton Apothecary
The Brighton Apothecary herbal shop and advice centre is run by a team of dedicated and professional medical herbalists with a passion for using herbs to heal. They provide advice and personally tailored remedies following a free mini-consultation, as well as high-quality natural health and beauty products.
Unit 7: Buttons and Bows Haberdashery
John and Bob have been the market’s haberdashers since the 1980s. They provide a wide range of haberdashery, crafts materials, fabrics, knitting yarns and much more.
Unit 8: Mari’s Deli
Mari offers Spanish artisan products such as cured meats, Iberian and Serrano hams, a selection of olive oils, cheeses, wines, olives, Catalan sandwiches and montaditos, and hand carved ham.
Unit 9: Foodshed
Foodshed is a social enterprise focussing on locally grown/reared and made produce. We offer demos and workshops to help our customers learn about the processes that come with the food they buy. Our ‘rent a shelf scheme’ allows local producers to sell their wares. All profits are ploughed back into the community through a grant scheme.

The market’s fishmonger Paul sells a range of local fish and seafood products.
Unit 12: Victor Charles Patrick Mears
Pat and his family have been selling fruit and veg in the market for more than three decades.
Unit 13: Jack Hill
‘Tools are us’ for the obscure and the unusual.
Unit 14 and 15: Streets Café
The Streets Café offers a traditional English breakfast as well as lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The cafe caters for everyone including vegetarians, gluten free, calorie controlled diets, and children’s meals.
Unit 16: Objet D’art
Objet D’art brings a wide range of antiques and collectables to the market – French art Deco lamps, bronzes, glass, and furniture and much more.
Unit 18: 18 Grocery
Wholesale and retail Thai herbs, spices, Chinese, Japanese, Korean seasonal fruits and vegetables, dry foods, fresh produce and products from all over the world.

Unit 19: Mohammad – Spice of Life
Chef Mohammad presents a range of his award-winning Bangladeshi and Indian subcontinent fresh, home-cooked, chilled dishes; Bangla snacks, sweets and desserts, freshly mixed spices; groceries and Halal products.
Unit 20: Pinnacle People Community Bike Enterprise
This not-for-profit bike project helps local unemployed people back into work. We use bikes that have been donated to us and work with our customers to restore them for use and sale. The work experience they gain whilst on the project helps them gain confidence and build self-esteem, making the transition into employment a little less daunting.
Unit 21: Shaboutique
Shaboutique is a working studio where local artists take recycling to the next level. Home interiors such as armchairs, tables, lighting, cushions as well as clothing and accessories and handmade cards will be on display. All one of a kind and made from materials rescued from the local waste stream.

Unit 22: Unit 22
Adding some whimsy to the market, Beth and Charlotte at Unit 22 make beautiful, hand-made fairy dresses that are sure to appeal to children! They also offer a lovely range of locally produced fashion and accessories for girls and women.
Unit 23: Jessica Beauty Salon
The salon offers a wide range of beauty services including hairdressing for women and men, nail care, and a variety of cosmetics and beauty products.
Unit 24: Cosmo’s
Cosmo’s is a shop for kids and adults, specialising in movie, gaming and comic memorabilia, although not forgetting toys of course! New/vintage toys, Starwars, trading cards, prop replicas, signed items, skateboards for the skatepark and much more!
Unit 25: Eco Makers Emporium

Unit 40: Kouzina
This ‘Modern Rustic’ Greek speciality cafe offers delicious, healthy light meals including hot toasted Greek sandwiches, veggie moussaka, beautiful stuffed vegetables, Mediterranean salads, deliciously robust lentil and bean dishes, and ‘mezze’ plates – all lovingly prepared from locally-sourced, organic produce.

Unit 43: The Fruit Shop
This old fashioned green grocer offers high quality at a fair price. 10% off to students and free delivery to local businesses.

Studio 1: The Artpothecary
The art shop run by artists who believe that along with the sale of both traditional or specialist supplies, such as sketchbooks or high-temperature silicone, there needs to be a base where other artists may come in for friendly support and advice about their project. We aim to be a community resource hub for the professional and amateur alike.
Studio 2: Open Arts
Open Arts is a collaborative project between Autism Sussex, Impetus and Grace Eyre that provides therapeutic support and social enterprise opportunities to people with Asperger’s, Autism and Learning Disabilities through visual and live arts courses at our Open Market studio. Artworks produced within the studio will be sold in our gallery space, generating revenue to support the continuation of the project.
Studio 3: Woody
Now celebrating her studio’s 10th year, Woody collaborates on a diverse mix of creative projects from super graphics that adorn NHS hospital walls to creating Topshop’s most successful artist range. Sometimes the studio will become a shop selling Woody products.
Studio 4: Love The Rock Tattoo
Love The Rock is an appointment-only tattoo studio specialising in custom artwork. Anything from small tattoos to large projects taken on.
Studio 5: Alison McGechie Artist Maker
Alison is a 3D artist creating organic sculptures handcrafted in natural and reclaimed materials. Examples of work are on display in the studio. Work to commission. Also offering workshops, classes and exhibition space.
Unit 6: Eve Claire Taylor Silversmith and Jeweller
Silver jewellery and tableware is handmade and crafted in Eve’s workshop. Eve works to commission and runs workshops for complete beginners and those who already have experience.
Studio 7: Partially Obscured
Partially Obscured is a specialist glass craft and design business, offering glass tuition, personalised giftware and bespoke works. Fun and creative glass courses are guided towards individuals and small groups, ideal for hens, wedding preparations and celebratory parties. No prior glass experience is necessary, just a whole heap of enthusiasm.
Studio 8: Chilli Gems
Kat Castle-Sinden makes handmade bespoke jewellery using real gemstones and sterling silver. She also stocks real gemstone strands and vintage handbags. Men’s, women’s and children’s gemstone jewellery and bespoke wedding jewellery.
Studio 9: Pear Shaped Apparel
Brighton-based Pear Shaped Apparel have been rising through the ranks of the streetwear industry since 2007. Their studio in the Open Market is their first permanent retail shop and it will host a range of independent brands. PSA have also been commissioned to design an exclusive capsule collection for John Lewis for summer 2014.
Studio 10: Sew Fabulous Community Interest Company
Sew Fabulous is a community interest company that runs accessible creative workshops, courses and classes in sewing and textiles and one-off celebratory workshops for hen parties, special events and corporate clients. We offer creative sewing services and commissions and have an alterations and repairs service.
Studio 11: Zero Point Engineering Limited
Andrew offers a range of robotics and electronics kits, devices and services, custom-built robotics and educational kits.
