Brighton Marina: Kirsty Pollard on Royal National Lifeboat Institution

Janes Haskell Punch Bag

On Thursday 24 July, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will launch a major drowning awareness campaign – Respect the Water – in Brighton. With around 160 coastal fatalities each year, the charity is warning people to stay safe at the coast.

England rugby star, James Haskell, is supporting the campaign. At 11am on Thursday 24 July, he will be taking on the RNLI’s ‘Respect the Water punchbag challenge’ at Brighton Marina; battling against a punchbag filled with a quarter of a tonne of water, proving that water never tires… but people do!

The RNLI aims to halve the number of accidental coastal deaths around the UK by 2024. Through its Respect the Water campaign, the charity is reminding people not to underestimate the power of the sea – waves, tides, cold water and currents can catch out even the strongest swimmers.

Members of the public are welcome to come down and watch James take on the punchbag challenge, and find out more about what the RNLI is doing to help save lives from drowning around our coasts.

For more information on the campaign, visit rnli.org/respectthewater.
