Brighton to have new archdeacon within weeks

Brighton is to have a new archdeacon within weeks as church leaders shortlist candidates for the newly created role.

The Church of England diocese of Chichester announced in May that it would be creating the post of Archdeacon of Brighton.

The position – open to men and women – was advertised shortly afterwards. The deadline for applications was Friday 18 July.

The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in Chichester on Wednesday 3 September.

On Thursday (31 July) the Bishop of Chichester Martin Warner signed a pastoral order changing the name of the post to Archdeacon of Brighton and Lewes.

At the same time the post of Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings was renamed Archdeacon of Hastings, with Philip Jones retaining the job.

The diocese said: “The new archdeaconry will consist of the deaneries of Brighton, Hove and Lewes and Seaford.”

Brighton and Hove were previously served by the Archdeacon of Chichester Douglas McKittrick, a former vicar of St Peter’s Church in Brighton who lives in Hove.

The diocese headquarters – the regional office of the church – is in New Church Road, Hove.
