The Accrington Pals
We all know how WW1 plays must end but this one heads for its tragedy without excessive sentiment and with quite a few laughs. We witness a struggling Lancashire community’s crumbling hopes and swelling panic but also their practical, uplifting, everyday life continuing. The complex variety of characters in Peter Whelan’s play is well served by a very strong cast, headed by Louisa Taylor as May, an unsentimental costermonger. To enjoy this human side of the story get to Brighton Little Theatre this week or Lewes Castle later in the month. It does these heroes, both men and women, proud.
