Brighton and Hove councillor calls for Palestinian flag to fly from city’s public buildings

Images of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza have shocked many across the globe.

In fact they have shocked one Brighton councillor so much that he has asked local authority leaders to fly the Palestinian flag from its offices.

Ben Duncan, an independent councillor, claimed it would be a sign of solidarity to those suffering in the conflict.

But not everyone agrees – especially as the calls came in the same week the Union Jack is flying from the offices to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.

Cllr Duncan is no stranger controversy.

This is same councillor who was pushed out of the council’s Green group last month after he likened members of the armed forces to hired killers.

But his suggestion has led to a high-level discussion between leading councillors and top officials.

It is understood that council leader Jason Kitcat has suggested a symbol of peace be flown instead.

Ultimately Penny Thompson, the council chief executive, will make a decision.
