LIFE’S A BEACH
It may not have a lot of sand but Brighton’s beach is one of the best in the world.
That’s at least according to American broadcaster CNN who were behind the less-than-scientific new study.
The report into the world’s best city beaches ranked Brighton beach just behind the famed sandy stretches of Rio De Janeiro’s Ipanema, Bondi in Sydney and Waikiki in Honolulu.

SELFIE CONFIDENCE
It’s a growing trend that the likes of celebrities, politicians and even the Queen have got involved with.
And now, the Brighton’s Women’s Centre is jumping on the selfie craze with a project to celebrate it’s 40th birthday.
The charity hopes that by collating the images they can contrast the experiences of women today compared to the past.
The forty best images will then be shown at a public exhibition at the Jubilee Library in December.

OPENED SPACES
The South Downs is a place where anyone of any age can come and get away from it all.
And now, thanks to the efforts of Brighton and Hove City Council, there is more of it available for the public to enjoy.
The local authority has opened up 282 hectares or 670 acres as Open Access land, meaning walkers can now roam freely instead of being restricted to footpaths.
The new area, roughly ten times the size of Brighton’s Preston Park, adjoins existing Open Access land the council created in and around Stanmer Park in 2006.

BUTTERFLY BEAUTIES
Beautiful butterflies and magnificent moths were centre stage as dozens took part in the Big Butterfly Count.
Members of the public joined park rangers in monitoring the species at Waterhall in Patcham.
Our cameras caught up with those taking part.
PARKING U-TURN
When parking charges were introduced on one Brighton street little did traders know it would cost them thousands of pounds in just a few weeks.
But that’s what shop keepers on Matlock Road are claiming the £1 an hour charge is doing.
The restrictions were introduced in May as an extension to zone E.
But traders have claimed the new charge is pushing customers further out of town where parking is free.
After gaining the support of ward councillors, traders have claimed Brighton and hove City Council will look again at the charges at town hall meeting in October.

999 FUN DAY
Warning! Warning! Fun times were had by all who attended the 999 fun day at Hove Lawns.
Emergency service teams from across the city showcased their skills and equipment to the public, even allowing some to have a go themselves.
Highlights included police dogs in action, ambulance displays and people being rescued from cars.
All money raised went towards the Sussex Heart Charity who provide training and defibrillators across the county.

RECYCLING ROLL-OUT
Recycling rates in Brighton and Hove have declined by five per cent in the past five years.
So in an effort to get people to think about where they put their waste, council leaders have now rolled out communal recycling across the city centre.
The scheme was introduced in November after a lengthy consultation process. It now covers an area from Central Hove to Kemp Town.
But with figures for being green down, do those collecting the rubbish see it as the solution?
