How to: make-up

Credit to all the fine fancy folk out there who are adept at putting make-up on their own lovely faces; I applaud thee. I, on the other hand, need help. And I’m not afraid to ask for it. Sometimes I’m very happy to go ‘au naturel’, but Brighton-based make-up artist Lucy Kamper was on hand this month to show me a few tips and tricks for perfect party-time make-up – and it was a real treat.

Lucy uses a cosmetics brand called Arbonne, which is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, botanically based and
free from parabens, mineral oil, synthetic dyes and fragrances, as well as other nasty chemicals. My laughably poor skincare ‘routine’ was named and shamed pretty quickly, but Lucy assured me that Arbonne make-up is treatment based and is actually good for your skin (!). So it’s not the end of the world to fall asleep without taking it off …

Arbonne make-up is actually good for your skin

On my face, Lucy used primer, foundation, light concealer and a sheer glow highlighter. She then added colour and definition with ‘sand’ shadow on my eyebrows, a coco liner and linen, vanilla, indigo and java shadows on my eyelids, with ‘It’s a long story’ mascara. ‘Sunset’ blush and a translucent powder finished the look.

The cosmetics use something called ‘optilight technology’, exclusive to Arbonne, which gives a really flawless look to the skin.

Formulator Peter Matravers used to work for Aveda, but he left when they were bought by Estee Lauder and looked for a company more in line with his ethics; he chose Arbonne.

They’re very popular with make-up artists, and Lucy offers free make-up and skincare consultations for anyone looking to switch to ethical products, as well as people who are intimidated by make-up counters (Lucy swears this used to be her) or are just looking for some advice on updating their look. There is no minimum spend on products.

As a nutritionist, Lucy is passionate about using skin care and make-up which is good for both skin and health. She also happens to be delightful company, so I can’t recommend a consultation with her enough – and as far as our research suggests, she is the only make-up artist offering bespoke consultations using cruelty-free Arbonne products in Brighton.

Disclaimer: Apparently I suffer from the congenital defect of being unable to make a ‘normal face’ in photographs … sorry, Lucy.
