Neil Bartlett in conversation with Julian Clary

Bartlett is an extraordinary creative force, working across so many forms and with such success, but it is the form of the novel that I think he excels. His previous works of fiction have all been captivating so to hear him discuss the new work, The Disappearance Boy, was an un missable opportunity. Clary was able to add levity to the occasion with his wry observations but the heart of the event was Bartlett allowing us a glimpse of his creative process and an insight into his background. He reads beautifully too, a voice he says is that of his childhood clergyman, a voice that is also his performance, the Bartlett that he wants us to see. My only misgiving about any literary event of this kind is whether it will in any way spoil my enjoyment when I come to read the book – which I surely will.
