Film: Find yourself an audience …
Latest TV is now on air; did you manage to catch our two film programmes? PostFeature, presented by Joseph Gunn (also to be found on the sports pages of the magazine, and in a t-shirt when not around me!) and myself, goes out on Wednesdays at 5.30pm and is repeated throughout the week. Flip forward a few pages to the listings to see when.
The show is a mixture of film reviews and chat about what we would like to see in the cinema, along with a look at a different classic film each week and a few fun film factoids. This week we will be looking at the British horror As Above So Below for our main film, and two American comedies, Sex Tape and They Came Together, for the ‘what else is on’ part of the show.
Open to everyone, from documentaries to dramas, features to shorts …
For those of you not only interested in watching films but making them as well, I have the perfect programme for you to get involved with: FilmFest on 8!
On average, only 22% of films made in the UK for under £500,000 receive a theatrical release each year. Having your programmes make a splash at a film festival can be a great way to achieve this, but, as many filmmakers know, exhibiting your film can be exorbitantly expensive for low-budget filmmakers and those just starting in the industry. Many truly great films can struggle to find an audience, and gifted filmmakers find it hard to get their big break without large financial backing.
I’m planning on turning that around! FilmFest on 8 is a platform for the huge amount of British filmmaking talent that needs to find an audience. It will act as our own weekly film festival, open to everyone, from documentaries to dramas, features to shorts. I’m interested in all submissions. Your film doesn’t even need to be set in (or be about) Brighton! In fact, as channel 8 rolls out across the country, we plan for FilmFest on 8 to become a Sunday night staple across the nation.
Each year, there are twenty two times as many viewings of films on television as there are in the cinema. If you have a film that is just begging for an audience, then send the relevant details to me at Jessica@thelatest.tv with the subject heading ‘FilmFest on 8’.
The first FilmFest aired on Sunday with ‘South Coast’, a feature-length documentary from Will Jewell, about Brighton and Hove’s very own Hip Hop scene (it even includes an interview with local celebrity Norman Cook, otherwise known as ‘Fat Boy Slim’!
If you missed either programme then check the listings to find out when they’re repeated, or else watch again online with our catch up service.
